Fly-Line

8th May 2008 Still not been out for a proper fishing session. Messed around for a few afternoons at Bowden Springs, but mostly too cold. Current spells of better weather might make a difference for the weekend though.

The Other Pheasant's Tail

As it is the time of year when we begin thinking of game birds and the joys of winter, I thought I'd take an amusing look at an important safety issue, especially on a busy fishery. How do you carry your fishing rod? Is it straight out in front of you (stop sniggering at the back there)? If you carry a rod like that, you run a serious risk of damaging your gear and perhaps injuring another angler.Carried that way, you are much more likely to get tangled in the branches of bankside bushes, break your rod by colliding with obstacles, or plain poke someone's eye out!

So, this is where this "other pheasant's tail" thing comes in. If you carry your rod behind you, and it doesn't matter if you are a bait or fly fisher here, at an angle not unlike a pheasant's tail, you are far less likely to get caught in bushes, catching an obstacle will simply push the rod down and away, and you look a lot less intimidating to other anglers.

As for it being an "other" pheasant's tail, look up "PTN" in any decent fishing book.

Merry Christmas
